Latvian Radio Choir to premiere new programme Conversations without Words

August 29, 2024

Since 2013, the Riga A Cappella Festival has been shaping a new identity for the vocal music movement, presenting the tradition of a cappella singing as a modern and contemporary art form. The festival has featured many renowned artists — The Real Group, The Swingles, Postyr, Solala, Gentlemen Singers, Didgori, Anima Solla, Framest, Latvian Voices, the Riga Gospel Choir, Harmony4Riga, and the choirs Kamēr…, Balsis, Austrums, Sola, among others. Alongside concerts, the festival hosts seminars, masterclasses, and industry meetings on current topics in vocal music, creating a platform for dialogue. The a cappella music highlighted in the festival is a wonder created by the human voice itself, and the energy it carries always leaves a powerful impression. A cappella singing is at the very heart of the Latvian Song Festival tradition, and since time immemorial has been one of the defining symbols of Latvian identity, continuing to inspire new creative explorations in contemporary music.

In the concert program “Conversations Without Words,” dense layering alternates with transparent textures of sound color, resulting in scores of otherworldly music. Ranging from delicate minimalism to tense, richly woven writing, the music flows freely without strict form or fixed timelines, allowing both performers and listeners to surrender to the artistic experience.

Equally free-flowing are the texts created by the composers, strung like necklaces of abstract vowels and syllables with shimmering overtones. The composers shape their scores as illusionists and masters of texture, inviting everyone to listen and gaze into a space and time beyond reality — to surrender to dreams and to the flight of being.

The Latvian Radio Choir and conductor Sigvards Kļava are world-class stars of choral music, whose performances have been recognized with the prestigious Grammy and Gramophone Awards.

Lilija Lipora is an outstanding Latvian choreographer and movement director, well known for her work in the fields of Latvian theatre and dance. She has participated in various contemporary dance projects and festivals, with her works distinguished by an innovative approach and an ability to combine different art forms.

SPORTA 2 Quarter is a dynamic creative district that is constantly evolving and has become a beloved destination for enjoying art, culture, and a variety of events.
